The biggest misconception about the Present Perfect tense is that it expresses an action that starts in the past and continues up to now. This simplified and mistaken explanation is the greatest villain when studying this subject. So, let’s empty our minds and try the following:
- Emphasis: What is the speaker's goal?
- Other verb tenses: Would it be possible to use a different verb tense, if so, would it have the same meaning?
- Details: Pay attention to some words such as adverbs of time and reference.
